The Threat!

The glassy-winged sharpshooter (Homalodisca coagulata), originally native to the southeastern US, has now been found in Southern California as well, making it a threat not only to farms but to vineyards as well. This pest feeds on a wide variety of ornamental and crop plants. Of greater concern is its ability to spread the bacterium that causes Pierces's Disease, almond and oleander leaf scorch, alfalfa dwarf, and citrus variegated chlorosis.

Your Best Defense!

ECONET SS ABRI is the only crop screen specifically designed to defend against the Sharpshooter. Working closely with growers and entomologists, Svensson has developed ECONET SS ABRI to be a highly effective, environmentally responsible, and visually acceptable barrier against Sharpshooter infestation.

A Simple, Effective Idea!

The basic idea behind the ECONET SS ABRI screen is surprisingly simple. Most insects, particularly the Sharpshooter, have a normal flight path up to just 6 feet in the air. While overachievers with help from the wind may achieve higher flights, 20 feet is generally considered an insurmountable height. Thus, by using ECONET to create a 20-foot vertical barrier between Sharpshooter habitat and your crops, you can prevent any significant infestation without the use of chemical insecticides!

Looks Matter!

Increasingly, as farmers and growers come under scrutiny from neighbors and community organizations, the last thing you need to face is a confrontation over "creating an eye-sore." No problem!

ECONET SS ABRI is constructed of black, highly UV stable, polyethylene monofilament mesh. Its black color makes it nonreflective and much less noticable than other materials.

The Barrier!

The ECONET SS ABRI is 10 feet wide with four 2.3mm monofilament wires running the length of the screen, one on each edge and two evenly spaced between the edges. These wires provide stability and added strength. The mesh itself is knitted to exclude the Sharpshooter with the least amount of wind resistance.

To create a 20-foot barrier, two ECONET screens are joined one atop the other with hog rings about every 12 inches. The ECONET panels are then attached to poles with either long galvanized staples or vinyl-coated wire. Avoid using sharp or rough materials which can create holes or tears in the screen.

The wood or metal poles should extend 20 feet above the ground and be placed 10 to 20 feet apart depending upon expected wind loads. Use your best judgement regarding how deep to bury the posts, or whether or not to use concrete. We recommend installing a guy wire extending from the top of each post out to a stake for additional support.

Stop The Attack!
